Parana On The Fly

Fishing every day for the largest Dorado in the world with ease and comfort that most other places in South America don’t offer.

Whether it’s on the Fly or Lure you don’t need to be a marathon runner to get in amongst these giants.

During my stay there where Dorado in excess of 15kg caught daily.

On average you will expect to land at least 2 dorado in excess of 10kg with many strikes in between.

In addition to Dorado you will also have the opportunity to fish for Pacu, Pirapita, Boga and Pacui.
On the day I arrived Vince and Corito from the USA with a double hook-up and others also managing great catches.

The lodge has private accommodation with incredible food and tremendous staff that will have you laughing all day. The Lodge is located on the Upper Parana River, and is home to some of the largest Dorado in all of South America.

This is best location in South America for excellent easy access to fishing for Giant dorado on safe modern boats.

AXIOM II

Engineered to fit the angler (not the other way around), the Axiom II fly rod offers the optimization of the three-dimensional approach to casting a fly, hooking a fish and landing it.

Axiom II (A2):

The first crucial test of a fly rod is as that of a delivery system. 

These rods optimize engineering and materials to satisfy the broadest range of casting styles and strokes.  Whether short and powerful or long and smooth, the rods will accept how one casts without the need to adapt casting stroke to rod action.

Within delivery, a rod’s range of power, or ability to handle various amounts of line weight – either by uplining or by carrying extreme amounts of any given weight fly line in the air – is one of the A2’s great qualities.  Another way to think about delivery is “How much line mass is needed to carry this heavy/wind resistant fly”?  If you need to put a 9 or even a 10 wt on an 8 wt A2, go right ahead … the rod will handle the extra weight just fine.

The standard AFFTMA 8 wt fly line should weigh 210 grains at 30 feet.  For those of us who don’t think in “grains”, that is about half an ounce.  In conventional spinning and casting tackle, this 8 wt rod would have a RANGE of ¼ – ¾ ounce lures.  Think of an A2 fly rod the same way – it handles a great range of weight.  As we continue to learn that all fly lines are not created equal, or not all 8 wt marked lines weigh 210 grains (1/2 ounce) at 30 feet, we encourage you to question the true weight of any fly line designation.  Most modern fly lines are heavier that the AFFTMA standard and in some instances, particularly with the increasingly popular integrated shooting heads, MUCH heavier.  Again, not a problem with the A2 design.   

Finally, delivery is a function of line speed.  Acceleration bends (loads) the rod with energy that is discharged when you stop.  Sadly, the energy stored is always more than the energy discharged due to the weight and action of the rod blank – some energy is retained to stabilize the blank.  Our A2 design is the most efficient energy delivery tool that our noted Advisory Staff designers have tested to date.  Easy to load (bend) and quick and efficient in unloading, which also insures accurate and true tracking.  No bounce, shock and no wobble on the stop – A2 rods are very smooth and efficient casting tools. 

But how well do they fight fish?

The last and possibly most gratifying job a rod has is to bring the fish to hand, or net, or boat so you can capture the “Kodak” moment for all times.  Fly rods offer the angler a range of options based on the butt angle to the fish.  At or near 90 degrees to the fish’s pull, a rod is a long shock absorber that helps protect lighter tippet.  At 45 degrees, the effective lever shortens and the bottom half of the rod now has bend, has more power and allows you to put more pressure on a fish.  Heavy tippet and big strong fish allow for fighting angles that are very slight – think 15 – 25 degrees.  The bend or load is now down in the butt – in the most powerful part of the rod.  Three tools in one let you protect lighter tippet, take charge of most fights with a 45 degree angle, or land big tarpon with 20# tippet and low fighting angles.  The A2 design accommodates all three and lets you choose how and when to apply pressure.  Much like the delivery discussion above, the range of power gives you a great advantage.

The 8 weight Axiom 2 I’ve used as an example weighs only slightly more than 3 ounces, which is a very light weight for the dynamic range of power.  Based on all the rods we’ve ever cast, we know it is one of the most efficient high performance rods ever made.  Power to the Angler!!!

Noel Jetson

Jet-Fly, as Noel was commonly known by his clients, was Tasmania’s first professional fly fishing guide.

If you are going to talk about Flies and Fly tiers you need to talk about this man Noel Jetson, a lot of people out there would know much more about Noel than I do I have only dealt with the man on three occasions.
The first time in his fishing shop “Jetfly” in Cressy I think, on my first visit to Tasmania straight off the ferry I saw a fishing store on the way to the highlands. I popped in and spoke to an elderly gentleman who not only loaded us up with flies but also told us where to camp, Jonah Bay at Arthurs Lake. He also gave us ideas on what lakes to fish on different weather conditions, and the flies we should swim at each.
At the end of the encounter I asked if he had fished up there much (the Central Highlands) “Yeah a fair bit” came the casual reply.
Two Days later I went out with Guide Brett Wolf who worked with Peter Hayes in those days when he looked in our boxes he said, ‘I see you have been to visit Noel at Jetfly”, yes I replied doe’s he know what he’s on about, Brett laughed out ‘Noel no one knows more, he’s a legend.
Anyway you won’t need those I’m going to take you out to the Western Lakes we will use size 14 Red Tags” I asked will we use any other types of flies today and his quick reply came” maybe size 12’s or 16’s”.
Back to Noel my only two other encounters were on the phone in 2006 about 15 years after I had met him. I had started to collect flies by tiers and boxed them up for display.
Noels shop Jetfly had been gone for some time now so I cold called the tying genius on the off chance he would Tie Two sets of 8 flies of his all-time favorites for a complete stranger in Melbourne, (me).
At first Noel didn’t know what I was talking about he asked me to speak up and then told me he was going to get a piece of paper because he had already forgot what I had asked for in a very LOUD voice.
I gave him my address and having already told me he was old and forgetful said he would see what he could do. Noel was mid seventy and had lost his wife I really wasn’t expecting much, but just 4 days later a parcel arrived with the most precious flies I had ever seen, with a note attached, “I knew I would forget so I sat up all night to tie your flies, I hope they are what you are after”.
The third encounter was of coarse the thank you phone call I made immediately and Noel told me to thank his Good mate Ken Orr who had taken them to the post office and posted them for him. Well thank you again everybody.
I promptly Boxed the flies under glass and as with all my boxes I wrote a little something about the Tier, this is what Noels box say’s.

Noel Jetson

Now retired from trout guiding Noel and his wife Lois moved to Swansea in the mid 1990’s where Lois died in 2006.
Over many years their “Jetfly” tackle shop and guiding business in Cressy was synonymous with Tasmanian fly fishing.
Many visitors came to Noel and Lois for flies, local knowledge and guiding.
A protege of the late Dick Wigram, Noel is a master fly tier and has tied flies commercially in both New Zealand and Australia.
Noel was an adult education tying instructor for twenty five years and conducted fly fishing lessons at Bronte Park.
He is a past President and life member of both the Northern Tasmanian Fisheries Association and the Tasmanian Professional trout Guides Association.
He is a past president of the Fly Fishers Club of Tasmania, and was the first qualified Australian casting instructor for the fly fishers Association of America.
Noel famously claimed a Red Tag is all you need but is responsible for developing a great number of outstanding patterns and popularising many others.
The flies Noel sent me were Black Spinner, Noel’s Nobby, Highland Dun, Red Tag, Juno Matuka, Royal Coachman, Red Spinner, Mrs Simpson.
I apologise in advance for any miss information I may have given here it is how I remember it 8 years ago.

The Otways

West Coast Victoria

Fished the Cumberland River near Lorne for a couple of hours on Sunday . What a beautiful valley, was a little disappointed with the fish size and numbers, still a lovely time. These small Otway streams should be no take rivers, years ago I learnt to fly fish in these streams and the trout were much more plentiful and bigger, this may be linked to the decade of drought but I think angling pressure also makes a difference. I will try a few other Otway streams over the coming weeks and report in on my findings

Fishing was red hot with many Browns, Rainbows and Reddies taking Shrek like flies.

A boat us a must on this lake as it is impossible to fish from the banks.

Lake Purrumbete

Frank and I had a big weekend in the Camperdown area, we left late on Friday and stayed at the Lake Purrumbete Caravan Park. On Saturday morning it was blowing hard from the north so I headed to Bullen Merri while Frank helped John the owner of the park set up a fishing buy swap and sell show, hard going so later back to Purrumbete and the only area from the bank on a strong north Hosies and Shag rock for nothing. at 2pm off to Deep Lake for more nothing back to Bullen Merri both taken once both missed on dark, 10 kms walking, home to bed defeated. 

Sunday morning light wind off to the Quarry. 

Found them!!! 

We got 11, few small rainbows and a small brown some larger swirls and missed, then bang a lovely 6 pounder took about 15 minutes to land trying to keep it out of the weed, its great when the drought breaks after a lean spell.
